A new book from a highly original and talented author.
A rich novel filled with beauty, danger, politics, and intrigue.
Fast-paced and dazzlingly imaginative, Dreamhunter will draw the listener into an extraordinary fictional world in which dreams are as vividly described as the cream cakes in the tea shop, the sand on the beach or teenage first love. Set in 1906, Dreamhunter describes a world very similar to ours, except for a special place, known simply as The Place, where only a select group of people can go. These people are called Dreamhunters and they harvest dreams which are then transmitted to the general public for the purposes of entertainment, therapy - or terror and political coercion. Fifteen-year-old cousins Laura Hame and Rose Tiebold both come from famous dreamhunting families, but only Laura proves to be blessed with the gift and once inside The Place she finds out what happened to her missing dreamhunter father and reveals...
Elizabeth Knox creates a world recognizable as our own but with a geographical twist -- a mysterious land called "the Place." Only "dreamhunters" can go there to capture dreams and bring them back to share with others. Laura and Rose are cousins and children of famous dreamhunters: Laura's father, Tziga, discovered "the Place"; Rose's mother performs her dreams at the famous Rainbow Opera. (Others deliver nightmares for prisoners or relaxing dreams for hospital patients.) When her father disappears, Laura finds herself on a terrifying mission to find him. Edwina Wren skillfully conveys the dreamlike quality of the story with a wistful tone. She also develops fitting character voices -- Laura is sensitive and anxious, Rose is pert and confident, and the golem-like Sandman is a bit scratchy. A.B. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
